Abdominal aortic aneurysm (BAA)
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (BAA)
Pathological dilation of the main artery (aorta)
An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a pathological dilation of the main artery in the abdominal cavity (aorta) caused by a weakening of the vessel wall. The most common causes include high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, smoking, inflammatory autoimmune diseases, infections, genetic predisposition and advanced age.
An untreated abdominal aortic aneurysm can be life-threatening. The weakened vessel wall can rupture (aortic rupture) and lead to internal bleeding. In addition, damage to the vessel wall can lead to aortic dissection – a condition in which the wall layers of the aorta split open.
What are the symptoms and warning signs of an abdominal aortic aneurysm?
In most cases, an abdominal aortic aneurysm does not cause any noticeable symptoms and is often discovered by chance. In advanced stages, however, the following symptoms may occur:
- Pulsating feeling in the abdomen
- Back pain or abdominal pain
- Feeling of pressure or fullness
How is an abdominal aortic aneurysm diagnosed and treated?
The diagnosis is usually made by means of a precise ultrasound examination and computer tomography (CT), which assesses the size, shape, position and extent of the aneurysm.
The treatment depends on various factors, such as the size, shape, location and speed of the growth as well as the risk of a tear.
- Small aneurysms: regular checks and medication.
- Large or progressive aneurysms (from approx. 5 cm in diameter): Surgical treatment, either through minimally invasive endovascular procedures (stent graft implantation) or open surgical procedures.
